Barbie, fashion dads and Kylie Jenner’s year of style: what was your wardrobe like in 2023?

A year in fashion: Barbie, the fashion dads, Kylie Jenner and denim Crocs (ES)

Dad dandyism is the male viral load that keeps on giving. We’d love to know what this means for an atestosterone-filled table near you. But when Andrew Scott, Paul Mescal, Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer posed together in a knitwear thirst trap, the internet nearly shut down in shock. You may have also noticed Jacob Elordi’s appearances at the Saltburn premiere with Barry Keoghan, not to mention Taylor Swift’s new man Travis Kelce, whose appearance is getting more attention than her. At the end of the year comes, of course, Timothée Chalamet and his daring turns of Tom Ford Wonka; and let’s not forget, A$AP Rocky’s Bottega Veneta campaign and Pedro Pascal’s legs at the Met Gala. Men in high fashion runway looks are our Roman Empire. No, you’re leering.

Was it an ironic feminist look at entrenched and demeaning representations of women, or simply an excuse for fashion brands to cash in on a litany of pink tattoos and for beauty brands to hawk products promising “plastic-perfect” faces? ”? If the thought of those fuchsia posters still makes you feel excited, then bear with me: there’s awards season to get through. The film generated 1.1 billion #barbiecore views on TikTok, as well as a slew of somewhat ill-advised adult women dressed as dolls. Fortunately, pink’s dominance over fashion appears to be waning.

No coat, just panties

Emma Corrin’s turn on the Miu Miu runway in Paris in March sparked a no-pants trend that’s making waves this holiday season. According to fashion search engine Lyst, searches for shorts have increased 133 percent year over year. A joy for all of us. The panty look, as seen again on Corrin in Venice, continues where the sheer, nude dress trend hit its stride. Some, like Julia Fox, for example, might wonder why bother with clothes at all.

dress rich

Was it only in March that Gwyneth Paltrow uttered the dreaded phrase “hidden wealth in action” to us with her disarming nonchalance in a Utah courtroom? The endless think pieces pondering the meaning of The Row’s Loro Piana knits and coats were only partially satiated by the end of Succession. More quietly expensive clothes! Not forgetting a ridiculously spacious bag that is not U. The bourgeois obsession with dressing like a rich person persists, with fawning explainers filling TikTok about which beige Zara sweater to buy so that it looks more like a city car than a subway car.

Making Kylie a reality

This year the Kardashians made Kylie fashionable. Until now, the mother of two had been more concerned about her lipstick acolytes, but after appearing at the Schiaparelli show at Paris Fashion Week with a giant (fake) taxidermy lion taped to her chest, Jenner jumped into the style spotlight. Her 399 million Instagram followers can now emulate every faux leather look with the newly launched Khy brand.

Did TikTok kill royal style? Summer of the Tomato Girl might have given those opposed to Barbie’s pink color something to ponder, but isn’t it time to start thinking beyond the algorithm for our fashion tips? A thought.

Mom is the word

Just when everyone was complaining about the pitiful lack of women in creative director roles at luxury fashion houses, Phoebe Philo swooped in with the surprising internet offer of a £3,000 mum necklace. Her first collection definitely had a stealth flavor: gray turtleneck knitwear and military-inspired coats will soon be littering a store near you. But there are also flashes of fun with leopard print shoes. Step aside daddies, mom has returned.

Horrible, and not even splash-proof because of the holes in the side, but the Croc cowboy boots were still sold out. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, what’s wrong with everyone?

The humble cardigan emerged triumphant as this year’s fabric of the day, albeit with a sexual twist (Prada’s were sheer). Immortalized by David Hockney, Harry Styles’s striped Molly Goddard cardy set the sweater tone for fall.

Bad taste on tour.

I’m not sure any of us had the money to buy feather boas and colorful cowboy hats for a cool moment in the sun, but there’s no accounting for pop fandom. Harry Styles and Beyoncé and their convoy of buses came in and all of that was lying outside stadiums around the world. Beyhive has also managed to make head-to-toe silver a reality. Get ready for next year when Taylor Swift’s Eras tour will bring Swiftie cosplay to the forefront of the UK tour.

Loafers and socks? Ballet slippers? A white shirt with a stand-up collar and a sweater draped over your shoulders? The King’s Road homage was strong this year. An £800 price tag didn’t stop Alaïa’s studded ballet flats from becoming the most popular ballet flats of the year. Metallic embellished loafers and white athletic socks were a close second. For a full immersion and hints at the OG Sloane style, check out Saltburn and The Crown.

fall short

Menswear writer Derek Guy only needed to throw a few words about X to create an obsession with the length of Rishi Sunak’s trousers. In a slow August news cycle, he wrote: “It baffles me how the richest UK Prime Minister in history could live just steps from Savile Row, the largest concentration of skilled tailors, and end up paying $2,000 for a MTM suit. with sleeves and pants five to four inches too short.” We’re just relieved that he’s no longer showing off his Palm Angels sliders.

The death of the flower dress?

It’s been a long year, but in February John Lewis declared the death knell for the stranglehold the simple floral midi-length dress has had on us for the last decade. We were no longer going to wallow in the confident style routine of street numbers with blouses paired with white sneakers. But kind of a warning. Next spring will be filled with enough rose motifs to hit the brakes, but reevaluate your footwear options.

Right in the eye of the stealth wealth movement a savior appeared. Uniqlo’s crescent-shaped bag, available in endless color options, clocked up 119 million views on TikTok. We’ve seen enough, but we can appreciate the appeal of a useful and economical companion.

I say this with caution, but we may be reaching the peak. The things are scattered on Christmas trees, inflatable dryers and party dresses. Saloni’s Camille number adorned with a three-tiered glass arch is one of Hurr Rental’s most popular loans. Which means everyone is wearing it. Ergo, maybe not?
