With their disastrous World Cup campaign firmly in the rearview mirror, England now have another test of their white-ball credentials as they travel to the West Indies for a limited-overs tour.

The West Indies failed to qualify for this year’s World Cup, but this gives England a chance to bounce back after crashing out of the tournament with one win in their first six matches.

The England team will face the home team in three one-day internationals and then five Twenty20 internationals over the course of three weeks in December.

It will be the first time England have played the West Indies in ODIs in more than four years and they will be hoping for a better performance than what was produced during a “difficult” time in India.

When is?

England’s limited-overs tour of the West Indies runs from Sunday 3 December to Thursday 21 December. There are no warm-up matches, so England go straight into action against the hosts.

Ben Duckett has said it was “difficult” to watch England’s torrid World Cup campaign as he aims to play a major role in “a new beginning” for the one-day international team.

Duckett did not take part in the World Cup, but watched all of England’s games.

“Sometimes it was hard to watch and I see my teammates go out and fight,” he said. “It was really difficult. Personally, I’ve had six weeks to take a breather (it’s been a fantastic 12 months for me) and it might actually be quite refreshing. “I really want to go now.”

Duckett scored 107 not out, his first one-day international century, in England’s last ODI against Ireland in September. While opening in the Test side, Duckett batted at number four during the matches against Ireland and will remain in that position against the West Indies, when the three-game ODI series begins in Antigua on Sunday.

Despite England’s plight at the World Cup, Duckett said there has been no change in messaging towards the team, with an emphasis on retaining the method that took England to the 2019 World Cup and the World Cup. Last year’s T20.

“I don’t think there’s going to be a change because of how the World Cup went,” the Nottinghamshire player said. “It was possible that the guys were in their 30s and nearing the end of their 50-plus year career. So it seemed like there would always be a new beginning after that.

“It is a great opportunity to show what we can do. I’ve been around and out of the white ball group for the last few years and it’s been impossible to get in, so I’m personally eager to give it a try.

“I am one of the most experienced boys and I have played eight games. “I need to go and prove that I am good enough to be on this team and so are the others.”

“A new group of players”

England’s squad for the ODI series includes only five players who appeared in the World Cup, apart from Brydon Carse, who was called up during the tournament.

“It’s a pretty new group of players, which is really exciting, a similar team that did very special things in that series against Ireland,” Duckett said. “For each and every one of us, it is important to perform and that is how we see it.

“I know how difficult it is to stay in a team when there are so many players and I think the most important thing I have learned in the last 12 to 15 months is not to think too much about the future. I have to go and score runs in this series to get to the next one, there are people knocking on the door who aren’t here so I don’t think I’m a favorite for the next four years. “It would be foolish to think that.”

Phil Salt, the England opener, arrived in Antigua late on Thursday due to a family matter. England will make a decision later on whether to include him in Sunday’s opening ODI.

England have plenty of batting options for this series. Apart from openers Salt and Will Jacks, who could also be tested further down the order, England will also be keen to get opportunities for Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope, who will make their ODI debuts during the series. Harry Brook and captain Jos Buttler are expected to bat at five and six.

The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium pitch is expected to offer a noticeable change. This means England will face conditions similar to those they stumbled into during the World Cup in India, when they won just three of nine matches during the defense of their title.

The West Indies are beginning their own rebuild after failing to qualify for the World Cup in India, following defeats to Zimbabwe, the Netherlands and Scotland during the qualifying tournament. Adding to the team’s concerns, wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich has announced his immediate retirement from international cricket. Dowrich has just been called up to the team, after three years away from international football. He has not been replaced in the West Indies team during the three ODIs.
